Hazardous Waste Operations Refresher Syllabus
Our 8 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations Refresher Program satisfies annual refresher training requirements, established by OSHA in 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8), for workers engaged in routine site activities at hazardous waste and corrective action sites, and voluntary clean up operations. The program reviews safe work practices, emphasizing protection against hazardous materials exposure.

Hazardous Materials
Identify chemical and physical characteristics of materials and recognize situations using background and on-site information.
Toxicology & Monitoring Instruments
Discuss common toxicological terms, routes of exposure, and organ systems' response to toxic chemicals. Review allowable exposure limits. Characterize atmosphere using air monitoring instruments.
Personal Protective Equipment
Review the EPA levels of protection and explain the criteria for selecting the proper protection for a job involving potential contact with hazardous material. Review selection criteria for air purifying and supplied air respiratory protection. Demonstrate proper PPE donning and doffing techniques.
Site Control
Identify work zones and demonstrate proper decontamination line set up and activities.
Confined Space Entry
Review the hazards and safety procedures associated with entering permit required confined spaces. List elements of a confined space entry permit and discuss responsibilities of attendant, authorized entrants, supervisor, and rescue personnel.
Field Exercises
Fit Test (Optional)
Conduct qualitative respirator fit tests including positive and negative pressure tests. Students receive certificates of fit for air purifying respirators.
SCBA &/or Air Line Practical (Company Option)
Demonstrate proficiency inspecting, operating, donning and doffing SCBA and/or air line respirators.
Personal Protective Dressout & Decon
Demonstrate proper donning and doffing techniques for exclusion zone entry, work and exit.
